Background, purpose and progress to date
What was the problem / opportunity?Clean Consult was started by Livingstone Mukasa, who came from extreme rural poverty before moving to a Kampala slum to study and later to work. After working as a laundry manager he set up his own business, initially subcontracting all the cleaning and later buying laundry equipment. He had contact with TBN through a four day business start up course which he now delivers almost every month in his own time. His desire to increase capacity to offer better services and sustain business on a growth path led him to seek investment from TBN members. Although he had some debt with Barclays, the bank was charging 34% p.a.
What is the ProjectÕs vision?Investing in a growing cleaning company resulting in creation of more employment opportunities
How is this vision to be achieved?By purchasing dry cleaning equipment using a loan of $20,000 from two TBN members.
What progress has been made to date?Dry cleaning equipment acquired and installed, 20 jobs created and sustained for a year and counting, sales growth by more than 50%.
When will the project be self funding, i.e. cost covered by earned income?Company is self funding. Loan is for four years.
What has been the direct and indirect impact of the project to date?20 jobs created, increased staff morale, reduced outsourcing costs and improved customer service and service delivery.
Specifically, how many FTE jobs have been created or sustained? 20 jobs created.
How much direct and indirect investment has been made to date?Direct 20,000 USD and indirect 15,000 USD.
Lessons learned
What lessons have been learned? What do you know now that you wish you knew at the outset? It was timely, what we know now we should have done a thorough needs assessment -
Expansion and replication
What are your plans to expand or replicate the project?Improving on working capital requirements and expanding into other cleaning services like janitorial (office cleaning) services.
How many FTE jobs do you expect to have been created or sustained in 3 years?Creation of more 65 jobs
What help do you need to achieve your goals?More working capital, staff capacity building and office space.
Could this project be replicated by others elsewhere? What would be needed to do this? This kind of rapid SME growth could be achieved in many situations through a simple mechanism to provide reasonably low cost capital.
Are there documents to aid replication in the TBN resource library? No, but the TBN office can assist in finding investors.
