Community Lodge
The parish of Ruhanga is in a rural area of SW Uganda but on the main road where all traffic going to Rwanda Congo or mountain gorilla trekking pass. The proposed project – opening a Guest House and snack bar/coffee shop – was in an ideal position. The lodge runs a school along with adult business and vocational training.
Cleaning Business
Clean Consult was started by Livingstone Mukasa, who came from extreme rural poverty before moving to a Kampala slum to study and later to work. He had contact with TBN through a four day business start up course which he now delivers almost every month in his own time. His desire to increase capacity to offer better services and sustain business on a growth path led him to seek investment from TBN members.
Business Training
Many of the poor had taken out Microfinance loans to establish businesses, and most had paid them back, but many of their businesses had stagnated for easily avoidable reasons concerning customer focus & financial control. This training aims equip people who want to set-up small businesses with the key skills and understanding necessary to sustain their business & make them successful.
Basket Making
Gulu has suffered years of civil war but there has been relative peace since 2007. There is an opportunity for the many displaced people to make a living producing baskets. This project aims to help artisans make a living producing baskets.
TBN last year had a huge impact on me, not least because I ended up in the Jordan with the Mowgli Foundation and adopted a Jordanian mentee!
